Firstly, you can rule out some of the possible causes, by carrying out a few simple tests.
Here in Spain, pools can lose up to 3 inches of water per week through evaporation when the weather is hot and or windy.
To rule out water loss due to evaporation firstly try the bucket test. Place a bucket of water on the top step in your pool. Mark the level of water in the bucket, leave for 24 hours and compare the loss of water in the bucket to the loss of water in your pool. If the loss in your pool is greater than the loss in the bucket you have a leak.
Another possible cause of water loss is a worn multiport valve. Check that you are not losing water down the waste pipe when the pump is running and the multiport valve is in the filter position. Unscrew the glass fitting at the side of the multiport valve to monitor this. If you are losing water, the solution is to replace the multiport valve or install a valve to the waste pipe.
If you can eliminate the above and your pool is still losing water then you have a pipe leak or structural leak in the shell of your pool that is in need of repair.

A structural leak is apparent when all the pipes are tested and found to be leak free.
